Finding Dopamine

Project Type

Dance Lighting Design

Location

UNC Charlotte - Charlotte, NC

Date

March 2023

Role

Lighting Designer

Finding Dopamine was a part of the 2023 Under Construction student-choreographer dance concert.
This piece is an exploration of neurodiversity and mental health, with a focus on topics like ADHD, depression, and suicide. This dance is very thematic with the various songs it uses, and I wanted the lighting to reflect that. For example, one song discusses the singer considering drowning themselves, so I wanted it to feel like the dancers were underwater. Another part of the song discusses wanting to jump out of a window, so a dancer wrestles with the urge, and a second dancer comes in to save them. The last section of this piece discusses self-love, and the choreographer loved the idea of a rainbow cyc/stage wash to highlight this theme.
