Location

UNC Charlotte - Charlotte, NC

Date

March 2023

Role

Lighting Designer

From Hearts Reprieve to Arms Embrace was a part of the 2023 Under Construction student-choreographer dance concert.
Taking inspiration from Western folkloric archetypes, From Hearts Reprieve to Arms Embrace tells a universal story of connection, relationships, and lessons learned. It is a more nuanced variation on the storytelling structure of a fable, meaning a simple story with the central purpose of illustrating or enforcing a moral. Each dancer in this piece represents a different character archetype. The overall story it tells is like the story of the Prodigal Son. We see moments of unity, isolation, division, and struggle. The lighting highlights these key moments of the story, such as the moment of isolation with the down pool during the peak of the prodigal dancer's internal struggle; a warm/cool divide on the stage to represent her internal struggle between two choices; and an ending of reconnection and joy when the stage look is unified.
